Larry Eugene Copeland, Jr., is originally from the small East Tennessee town of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. He attended high school in Chattanooga and after graduation, in 1982, joined the United States Marine Corps. While in the Marines he attended and received his undergraduate degree at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. During his time at the University of Chattanooga clerked at the law firm of Miller and Martin, where his mother worked a secretary. It is at Miller and Martin where Larry found his love for the law and the courtroom.
After serving the country for 10 years he completed his service with the Marine Corps and entered Cecil C. Humphrey’s Law School, at the University of Memphis Law School. He graduated in 1997 and passed the Tennessee Bar Exam. After becoming licensed to practice law in Tennessee, Larry began his career in both state and federal criminal defense work under the shingle of attorneys Jacob Mac Dickenson and Wayne Emmons. His experience with Dickinson and Emmons exposed him to all aspects of criminal defense work and gave him early experience in defending almost every type of misdemeanor and felony offense, including first degree murder cases. After leaving the company of Dickinson and Emmons, Larry began his own practice and later joined with attorney Paul Guibao in the Law Office of Copeland and Guibao. In 2004, Larry joined with Joseph S. Ozment in what was then became known as the law office of Ozment, Copeland and Hays. Since that time the firm evolved in 2008 to The Law Office of Ozment and Copeland P.C. In 2008, Larry also became licensed to practice law in the State of Arkansas and he currently represents all of the firm’s Arkansas clients. In addition to becoming a prominent criminal defense attorney, throughout his career Larry has also been actively involved with Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, as well as the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is presently on the board of directors for the Tennessee Association for Criminal Defense Lawyers and is an instructor at the organizations Trial College, as well as serving as a law student liaison with the University of Memphis Law School.
